Australian Documentation Import Requirements for Boats

If your boat is paid off:

  • The original title of the boat (the title will be mailed back to you after presenting it to customs)
  • Bill of sale (if you purchased the boat recently)
  • A copy of your passport, ID, or driver’s license

If your boat is not paid off and has a lien:

  • An original and notarized letter of permission for overseas transport signed by the lienholder
  • A notarized front and back copy of the title
  • A copy of your ID, passport, or driver’s license

If your boat has a trailer:

  • All boats with trailers require import permits. (This is required even if you don’t plan on using the trailer in Australia.)
  • Apply for the permit directly with the Department of Infrastructure.

Australian Duties / Taxes Due

General guidelines on Australian Boat Duty & Taxes

For American-made boats shipped from the USA to Australia, there is No Import Duty. Please be aware if you buy a boat or yacht in the USA which was manufactured in another country an Import Duty of 5% FOB applies. This is the value of the boat plus the freight costs including any inland transport or repairs to the boat

  • American made boats imported from any country other than the USA will also incur import duty of 5%
  • Import GST of 10% applies to all boats & yachts on the CIF value, which is the cost of the boat or yacht, the cost of the insurance and the freight costs including any inland transport or repairs to the boat
  • The exchange is based on the day of departure from the USA supplied by Australian Customs

  • Transit times can vary depending on multiple factors, but generally the entire process takes between 30-50 days

Australian Quarantine Approval

You’ll have to get approval to show that your imported boat meets Australian Quarantine Standards. The Australian Border Force (ABF) is very strict on the potential of importing foreign boats and parts containing asbestos.

Trans Global has worked very hard over the past years to build a complete offshore pre-cleaning and an asbestos pre-testing/removal program with the ABF. Now the only approved offshore cleaning facility by the Australian government in the U.S.A, our West Coast facility enables us to offer “Guaranteed Pre-Cleaning” meeting the Australian Bio-security requirements for vehicles and boats

All boats and yachts with air conditioning or refrigerator units require an additional “Ozone Protection” import permit from the government to gain entry to Australia. There are exemptions from this rule including:

  • If you owned your boat for over a year and use it for private use.
  • Is being imported to Australia for private use.
  • Uses less than a certain amount of chemicals during a calendar year.

Containerized— One of the more affordable options to ship boats, this method uses enclosed steel containers to transport your watercraft. This transportation option has size restrictions and is only suitable for small boat shipping from the USA to Australia.

Lift-on/Lift-off — A costlier shipping option, LOLO uses an onboard crane to lift your boat onto and out of the ship. Boats are loaded onto the upper deck of the ship, eliminating height restrictions and enabling large boat transportation.

Flat Rack — Another shipping option with no height or width restriction, this method loads your boat onto a flat rack with a cradle to support it. We remove the vessel’s arches and radars to reduce the cost of boat transport from the USA to Australia.

Preparing Your Boat for Shipping from USA to Australia

Prior to shipping your boat to Australia, it’s important that you perform the following steps to avoid additional fees.

  • Clean your boat inside and out, including its undercarriage
    • Boat must be clean of foreign soil, invasive plants, and animals
  • Make sure there is less than a quarter tank of fuel
  • Disengage any after-market alarm system prior to shipment

Can I get asbestos clearance before shipping my boat?

Yes, TGAL is one of the few international boat shipping companies in the US that offers a certified asbestos pre-testing and removal program for vessel shipments to Australia. In collaboration with the Australian Border Force (ABF), we have built an asbestos cleaning facility on the US West Coast. The facility is the only offshore asbestos cleaning center approved by the Australian government, meeting the country’s biosecurity requirements for vehicle and equipment imports.

  • Marine Insurance – Per the Carriage of Goods by Sea Act (COGSA) liability is limited to per shipment. Working with trans global has been an amazing experience. From trying to begin a process without hard dates to suffering mechanical issues and arriving later than expected at the dock, the team that works for trans global have been amazing. They helped our process of getting the truck to its destination and I feel blessed by the angels at Trans Global who assisted us along the way.
